Flight Log of United Airlines Flight 1722 and 436 from Kahului to Baltimore via San Francisco
The final day of our 2023 trip to Hawaii as we flew back from Maui to Washington DC.
After an exhausting day in Haleakalā National Park, we took a good rest the previous night. Our flight would depart Maui at 2pm, which meant we could get up late, do some souvenir shopping, have a decent lunch, before heading towards the airport.
Ticketing
As mentioned in the previous posts, this was a Star Alliance award ticket issued by Turkish Airlines, costing only 7500 miles since it’s a domestic itinerary. For our return, we had the options of:
- Kahului – San Francisco – Baltimore
- Kahului – Los Angeles – Washington Dulles
- Kahului – Chicago – Washington Reagan
All three options had “X” class available on United’s website, for which I really liked the third option of Chicago connection. The long flight from Kahului to would allow us a decent rest on United’s 787-10 (I was a bit surprised that a 787-10 had the range to operate this 4100-mile flight given Kahului’s limited runway length), unlike the other two options where the entire journey was interrupted about halfway in the middle. It also left later in the day, giving us more time in Hawaii. Unfortunately, I tried a few phone agents of Turkish Airlines, none of which was able to issue this itinerary. Among the remaining two, Baltimore Airport suited our schedule better since we could have a car parked there, so we picked this route.

The line for security at Kahului Airport was long, wrapping around the terminal, but it also moved reasonably fast. In the end, we were inside the terminal an hour before our flight’s departure.
Once inside the terminal, I could have visited Hawaiian Airline’s Premier Club with my PPS membership. However, the reviews online weren’t that good for this lounge (compared to the one in Honolulu), and since we just had lunch about an hour ago, I skipped it.

While the boarding was largely on-time and orderly, once onboard, we sat at the gate for about an hour due to “last-minute customer service issue”. As a result, I watched the nearby United plane bound for Los Angeles, which was scheduled 20 minutes later than us (our other option back home), left before us.
One more thing to note, it happened that the two ladies sitting next to me were the ones that gave me the ride from Halemau’u Trailhead to Summit Visitor Center in Haleakalā National Park. We were all happily surprised by such coincidence.

The actual flight wasn’t very eventful. It’ certainly not as bumpy as my flight to Honolulu a week ago.
Before landing, we were given a tour of the city lights of silicon valley, where I picked up some landmarks like the campus of Stanford University.

At first sight, the interior of San Francisco Airport’s terminals were unlike most other in the nation, in that it’s stylish and modern. My feelings certainly changed after finding out such slick appearances were supported by exorbitant prices and fees from its concessions.

Flight UA436 from San Francisco to Baltimore
On paper, we had a 2-hour connection in San Francisco. The delay of our flight from Kahului meant it was cut slightly short, but still enough for us to grab some dinner before boarding our flight to Baltimore.

Despite it’s approaching midnight, San Francisco Airport was still busy. We waited in line for a few minutes for our turn at takeoff, from runway 1R (which wasn’t as often used as the pair 10/28).
Once airborne, I was treated with the beautiful lights of San Francisco and Oakland before we climbed into darkness, and I retired into slumber.

The skies lit up just as we approached Baltimore from the south, flying around Washington DC. In this way, I was treated with some nice views of the nation’s capital.

Finally, I took a video of the landing, of an uneventful conclusion to our Hawaii trip. Please bear with the white balance as the landing happened in twilight, and I tried my best at recovering it.
